paumier

paumier (say poh-mee-ay) comes from jeu de paume, the game of the palm. before there was tennis, players in france hit the ball with a bare hand, and by the end of the thirteenth century with a leather glove to protect the palm; the first racket is recorded in 1505.

the people who kept the courts and made the rackets were called paumiers, and we borrowed their name for our gloves.

we make gloves by hand in the uk, in nappa leather, suede and calf hair, for the darkest part of the year: one bright thing against black coats and grey streets. every style comes in size 7, in small runs of each colour.

every order ships tracked from the uk (in-stock pairs the next business day, late-shipping styles 14 days after you order), delivery is free to the uk and eu (£15 to the rest of the world), and you can return your order within 14 days of delivery.

materials & care

every pair is made of leather, in one of three finishes, and lined in silk or cashmere. here’s what each one is, how it wears and how to look after it.

nappa leather

nappa is smooth, supple grain leather, and for gloves it usually comes from sheep or lamb, which is light, fine-grained and flexible, so it moves easily with your fingers.

it softens and shapes itself to your hands as you wear it, and takes on a gentle sheen over time.

care

in nappa leather: 001 fringe gloves, 007 striped gloves and 008 knotted fringe gloves

suede

suede is the inner side of the skin, brushed to a soft, velvety nap that holds colour deeply and catches the light as it moves.

the nap flattens a little where you grip, and a quick brush lifts it again.

our python-print suede gloves are suede printed with a python pattern, not snakeskin, so look after them as you would any suede.

care

in suede: 003 checkerboard gloves, 005 plum python-print suede gloves and 006 brown python-print suede gloves

calf hair

calf hair is cowhide with its short, glossy hair left on, sometimes called pony hair even though it comes from cattle, and it feels smooth one way and textured the other.

the hair wears down slowly where it rubs most, like the fingertips, so it rewards a little care.

care

in calf hair: 002 spotted gloves

linings

every pair is lined, in silk or in cashmere.

silk

a thin, smooth lining that lets the glove slide on easily and sit close to the hand, so the shape of the glove stays slim. it suits autumn, mild winter days and evenings out.

lined in silk: 001 fringe gloves, 002 spotted gloves, 003 checkerboard gloves, 005 plum python-print suede gloves and 006 brown python-print suede gloves

cashmere

a soft, warm knitted lining that holds heat on colder days. it makes the glove a little fuller than a silk-lined pair and feels soft against the skin.

lined in cashmere: 007 striped gloves and 008 knotted fringe gloves

for every pair

nappa, suede and calf hair are natural materials, so each pair varies a little in grain and shade.
