paumier

paumier (say poh-mee-ay) comes from jeu de paume, the game of the palm. before there was tennis, players in france hit the ball with a bare hand, and by the end of the thirteenth century with a leather glove to protect the palm; the first racket is recorded in 1505.

the people who kept the courts and made the rackets were called paumiers, and we borrowed their name for our gloves.

we make gloves by hand in the uk, in nappa leather, suede and calf hair, for the darkest part of the year: one bright thing against black coats and grey streets. every style comes in size 7, in small runs of each colour.

about paumier

paumier (say poh-mee-ay) comes from jeu de paume, the game of the palm. before there was tennis there was jeu de paume, and it was played with the hand: in france, players struck the ball with a bare palm, and by the end of the thirteenth century most wore a leather glove to protect it. the first racket is recorded in 1505.

the people who kept the courts and made the rackets were called paumiers. thirteen of them are recorded in paris in 1292, and by the sixteenth century they were a recognised trade, with apprentices and masters. the game they kept gave its name to the tennis court at versailles where the third estate swore its oath in 1789, and to the jeu de paume in the tuileries, built as a court in 1862 and now a gallery.

we borrowed their name for gloves made for the darkest part of the year, when everything is black coats and grey streets: fringe that moves when you talk, python print in plum, a checkerboard in cream and black, one bright thing against everything else.

our gloves are made by hand in the uk, in nappa leather, suede and calf hair. every style comes in size 7 and is made in small runs of each colour, so once a colour sells out it may not come back in the same shade.

paumier was called wutong until october 2026. the gloves and the people behind them are the same. read the full story of the name.
