paumier

paumier (say poh-mee-ay) comes from jeu de paume, the game of the palm. before there was tennis, players in france hit the ball with a bare hand, and by the end of the thirteenth century with a leather glove to protect the palm; the first racket is recorded in 1505.

the people who kept the courts and made the rackets were called paumiers, and we borrowed their name for our gloves.

we make gloves by hand in the uk, in nappa leather, suede and calf hair, for the darkest part of the year: one bright thing against black coats and grey streets. every style comes in size 7, in small runs of each colour.

every order ships tracked from the uk (in-stock pairs the next business day, late-shipping styles 14 days after you order), delivery is free to the uk and eu (£15 to the rest of the world), and you can return your order within 14 days of delivery.

fringe after dark: tassel gloves for evening

published , by paumier, 2 minute read

the short answer

for evening in winter, gloves with fringe or tassels do what plain black gloves can’t: they move, catch the light and finish a dress under a coat. wear them with a slip dress, a black column or tailoring, and keep jewellery to one ring. paumier’s 008 knotted fringe gloves are black nappa with a black, tan and cream fringe.

black nappa gloves with a knotted fringe of black, tan and cream leather strips at the wrist

evening dressing in winter has a problem. the dress is beautiful. the coat goes on top. and then the gloves, usually black and plain, finish the look by saying nothing.

fringe changes that.

this autumn's runways treated fringe as something refined. the impression called it "movement, texture, and controlled drama". at night, that is exactly what you want from an accessory: something that moves when you raise a glass, and settles when you put it down.

the 008 knotted fringe gloves are black nappa. at the wrist, a long fringe in black, tan and cream is threaded through and knotted in place. under low light, the cream strands catch first, then the tan. the black disappears into the glove.

how to wear them after dark

over a black coat. the simplest. the fringe is the only detail between the sleeve and the hand.

with velvet. a velvet coat or dress in black, navy or deep green. matte velvet against smooth nappa.

with satin. a slip dress under a wool coat. the fringe echoes the movement of the fabric.

with jewellery. a ring worn over the glove, gold or silver. fringe and metal both catch light differently.

one rule: take one glove off at the table. hold it in the other hand, or lay it beside your plate. the fringe looks just as good at rest.

nappa is smooth, soft leather with a slight sheen. at the end of the night, smooth the fringe with your fingers so the strands lie straight. store the gloves flat. wipe with a soft dry cloth if needed. keep them away from candles and radiators.

every pair is size 7. change your mind within 14 days of delivery.

the night is long and the coat stays on. let the gloves do some of the talking.
