paumier

paumier (say poh-mee-ay) comes from jeu de paume, the game of the palm. before there was tennis, players in france hit the ball with a bare hand, and by the end of the thirteenth century with a leather glove to protect the palm; the first racket is recorded in 1505.

the people who kept the courts and made the rackets were called paumiers, and we borrowed their name for our gloves.

we make gloves by hand in the uk, in nappa leather, suede and calf hair, for the darkest part of the year: one bright thing against black coats and grey streets. every style comes in size 7, in small runs of each colour.

every order ships tracked from the uk (in-stock pairs the next business day, late-shipping styles 14 days after you order), delivery is free to the uk and eu (£15 to the rest of the world), and you can return your order within 14 days of delivery.

black nappa gloves with a knotted fringe of black, tan and cream leather strips at the wrist

some fringe falls. some is tied.

the 008 knotted fringe gloves are black nappa. at the wrist, a long fringe in black, tan and cream is threaded through and knotted in place. it swings loose as you move. the knot holds it.

it is closer to a tassel than a trim. three colours, one gesture.

rté noted that fringe this season sits on "minimalist, structured or monochromatic pieces", and suggested starting with "cuffs or small details". a glove is both.

the three colours do the styling for you.

black. the glove itself. it disappears into a black coat and lets the fringe speak.

tan. the bridge. it picks up a camel coat, a brown boot, a leather bag strap.

cream. the light. it echoes a cream scarf or a white shirt cuff.

wear it with any one of them and the outfit looks considered.

one rule: let one of the three colours repeat somewhere else. only one. more looks matched; less looks random.

the knot also changes the movement. a loose fringe falls straight. a knotted one swings in a small arc and settles. it's quieter, and it stays in place through a day of coats going on and off.

you can wear them with gloves off, too. tucked into a coat pocket, the fringe hangs out and stays part of the outfit.

nappa is smooth, soft leather with a slight sheen. wipe it with a dry cloth. keep it away from heat. store the gloves flat so the fringe stays straight.

every pair is size 7. change your mind within 14 days of delivery.

take them off and lay them on a café table, and the three colours sit in a small loose pile.

on a grey morning, the cream strands are the first thing anyone sees.

the season is about fringe. this is fringe, tied down.
