paumier

paumier (say poh-mee-ay) comes from jeu de paume, the game of the palm. before there was tennis, players in france hit the ball with a bare hand, and by the end of the thirteenth century with a leather glove to protect the palm; the first racket is recorded in 1505.

the people who kept the courts and made the rackets were called paumiers, and we borrowed their name for our gloves.

we make gloves by hand in the uk, in nappa leather, suede and calf hair, for the darkest part of the year: one bright thing against black coats and grey streets. every style comes in size 7, in small runs of each colour.

every order ships tracked from the uk (in-stock pairs the next business day, late-shipping styles 14 days after you order), delivery is free to the uk and eu (£15 to the rest of the world), and you can return your order within 14 days of delivery.

fringe gloves: how the boho revival reached your wrists

published , by paumier, 5 minute read

the short answer

fringe gloves are back because fringe is back: the boho revival that began with chloé’s autumn/winter 2024 collection returned at chanel, loewe and rick owens for autumn/winter 2026. wear them with clean, simple clothes so the fringe can move. paumier makes two black nappa fringe gloves: the 001 with a deep black fringe and the 008 with a three-colour fringe.

fringe is one of the most cheerful things that can happen to a glove. it turns a plain pair into something that moves when you do, catches the light, and gives even the simplest coat a bit of swing. it’s also very much of the moment, the latest chapter of a boho revival that has been building on the runways since autumn/winter 2024.

are fringe gloves in style?

yes. marie claire traces the current boho revival to chloé’s autumn/winter 2024 show, under its new creative director chemena kamali, and by spring/summer 2025 it had brought fringe back on isabel marant jackets and a fringe-trimmed ralph lauren duster1. by the autumn/winter 2025 shows, the impression found fringe “everywhere from slick tailored sets to knitwear”2.

for autumn/winter 2026 fringe got bolder. instyle named “cartoonish fringe” one of the season’s trends, at chanel, loewe and rick owens3, and coveteur gave fringe a trend of its own, western-inspired, with fringe from the 1920s, 1960s and 1970s all on display4. at the 2026 met gala sabrina carpenter wore embroidered fringed cuffs with black stretch-tulle gloves and a custom dior gown5, one of the best-dressed looks of the night according to v magazine6.

how do you wear fringe gloves?

let the fringe be the only movement in the outfit. fringe looks best against clean, plain shapes, a long straight coat, a fitted knit, straight trousers, so that it has room to swing and nothing else competes with it.

  • with knitwear: our 001 fringe gloves were shot with a grey argyle cardigan, a white t-shirt and black trousers, and the fringe is what makes the outfit.
  • with a long coat: black fringe against a black coat is subtle until you move; a multi-coloured fringe against black is the point of the outfit.
  • with denim: fringe gloves, jeans and boots are an easy nod to the western side of the trend.
  • in the evening: a fringe at the wrist does what a long glove does, drawing the eye to your hands, with a slip dress or a black column.
  • with jewellery: keep it to one bold ring or a bangle above the fringe, so the strands can fall freely.

black fringe or multi-coloured fringe?

both are black nappa underneath, and the difference is how much you want the fringe to show.

what coats go best with fringe gloves?

plain ones. a long, straight wool coat in black, grey or camel is the perfect background, because it gives the fringe a clean surface to fall against. a coat with deep cuffs works if you wear the gloves over the cuff rather than tucked in. busy coats, heavy shearling or a lot of buttons and buckles at the wrist compete with the fringe, so save those for a plainer glove.

do fringe gloves get in the way?

not as much as you’d expect. the fringe falls from the wrist, away from your fingers, so it doesn’t catch when you hold a bag, a coffee or a phone. it does move, which is the point, and it’s worth keeping it away from velcro fastenings. if you need to use your phone without taking a glove off, the 001 fringe gloves have a touchscreen tip on the index finger.

are fringe gloves western?

they can be, but they don’t have to be. coveteur reads this season’s fringe as western in spirit4, and with jeans and boots that’s exactly how fringe gloves look. with a grey coat and tailored trousers they read as something quite different: graphic, a bit glamorous, more 1970s than ranch. the gloves stay the same; the outfit decides.

fringe gloves or opera gloves?

they solve the same problem, how to make your hands the focus, in opposite ways. an opera glove adds length up the arm and needs a short or pushed-up sleeve to be seen. a fringe adds movement at the wrist and works with any coat, which makes it the more practical choice for everyday winter. grazia’s styling advice for long gloves, worn over the jacket sleeve or with the sleeve pushed up7, works for fringe too. more in how to wear opera gloves.

how do you look after fringe gloves?

  • if the strands tangle, separate them gently with your fingers rather than pulling.
  • if the fringe gets wet, blot it, lay the gloves flat with the strands straight, and let them dry naturally, away from radiators.
  • store fringe gloves flat, with the fringe laid out, rather than crushed into a pocket or a drawer.
  • keep fringe away from velcro and rough bag straps, which can catch the strands.

the rest of the care is the same as for any nappa, and it’s all on our materials & care page.
