paumier

paumier (say poh-mee-ay) comes from jeu de paume, the game of the palm. before there was tennis, players in france hit the ball with a bare hand, and by the end of the thirteenth century with a leather glove to protect the palm; the first racket is recorded in 1505.

the people who kept the courts and made the rackets were called paumiers, and we borrowed their name for our gloves.

we make gloves by hand in the uk, in nappa leather, suede and calf hair, for the darkest part of the year: one bright thing against black coats and grey streets. every style comes in size 7, in small runs of each colour.

every order ships tracked from the uk (in-stock pairs the next business day, late-shipping styles 14 days after you order), delivery is free to the uk and eu (£15 to the rest of the world), and you can return your order within 14 days of delivery.

cashmere-lined or silk-lined leather gloves: which to choose

published , by paumier, 1 minute read

the short answer

choose cashmere-lined leather gloves for warmth on cold days: the knitted lining holds heat and feels soft. choose silk-lined gloves for a slimmer fit on mild days and evenings. paumier’s 007 striped and 008 knotted fringe gloves are lined in cashmere, and the 001 fringe, spotted, checkerboard and python styles in silk, £84 a pair.

are leather gloves warm enough for winter?

for most uk winters, yes: leather blocks wind far better than knit, and the lining adds warmth. on the coldest days choose cashmere, with a cuff that tucks under your coat sleeve.

the paumier pairs, by lining

lined in cashmere: the 007 striped gloves, cream nappa with glossy black stripes, and the 008 knotted fringe gloves, black nappa with a three-colour fringe. lined in silk: the 001 fringe gloves, the 002 spotted gloves, the 003 checkerboard gloves and the python-print 005 plum python-print suede gloves and 006 brown python-print suede gloves. every pair is £84 a pair, size 7. more on the materials page.

looking after a lined glove

  • never wash leather gloves; spot-clean the leather and let the lining air.
  • if they get wet, dry them flat at room temperature, away from radiators, so neither leather nor lining shrinks.
