paumier

paumier (say poh-mee-ay) comes from jeu de paume, the game of the palm. before there was tennis, players in france hit the ball with a bare hand, and by the end of the thirteenth century with a leather glove to protect the palm; the first racket is recorded in 1505.

the people who kept the courts and made the rackets were called paumiers, and we borrowed their name for our gloves.

we make gloves by hand in the uk, in nappa leather, suede and calf hair, for the darkest part of the year: one bright thing against black coats and grey streets. every style comes in size 7, in small runs of each colour.

every order ships tracked from the uk (in-stock pairs the next business day, late-shipping styles 14 days after you order), delivery is free to the uk and eu (£15 to the rest of the world), and you can return your order within 14 days of delivery.

handmade luxury gifts, and how to tell what's really made by hand

published , by paumier, 2 minute read

the short answer

a handmade gift should show it in the details, not just say it. the 008 knotted fringe gloves are nappa leather gloves made by hand in the uk by paumier: black nappa with a three-colour fringe threaded through the wrist and knotted in place. £84, size 7.

what should "handmade" mean?

read the word with care. a fair test: a seller should be able to tell you what the material is, and point to the parts of the object where the work shows. if they can't, the word is doing too much.

where does the work show on a glove?

the fringe. on 008, the fringe in black, tan and cream is threaded through the wrist and knotted. look for knots that sit evenly along the cuff.

the seams. stitches should be small, even and straight along each finger.

the wrist. binding, gathering or a turned edge should be clean on the inside as well as the outside.

the leather itself. small variations in grain are normal in nappa and suede. they are part of a natural material.

which pairs show it most?

- 008 knotted fringe gloves: the knotted fringe.

- 001 fringe gloves: a deep black fringe from the wrist, touchscreen tip.

- 003 checkerboard gloves: a cream checkerboard set into black suede.

what should you avoid?

words stacked together to sound made-by-hand without saying anything. a material described only as "genuine" or "premium". no detail about how the item is finished.

how does delivery work?

last christmas order dates in the uk: thu 17 dec for in-stock pairs, and thu 3 dec for late-shipping styles, which leave us 14 days after you order. these aren't delivery promises: each product page shows current stock and dispatch time, and delivery & returns has the dates for other countries.

delivery is free to the uk and the eu, and £15 to the rest of the world. we ship worldwide, tracked.
