paumier

paumier (say poh-mee-ay) comes from jeu de paume, the game of the palm. before there was tennis, players in france hit the ball with a bare hand, and by the end of the thirteenth century with a leather glove to protect the palm; the first racket is recorded in 1505.

the people who kept the courts and made the rackets were called paumiers, and we borrowed their name for our gloves.

we make gloves by hand in the uk, in nappa leather, suede and calf hair, for the darkest part of the year: one bright thing against black coats and grey streets. every style comes in size 7, in small runs of each colour.

every order ships tracked from the uk (in-stock pairs the next business day, late-shipping styles 14 days after you order), delivery is free to the uk and eu (£15 to the rest of the world), and you can return your order within 14 days of delivery.

a gift for the woman who has everything: the pair she doesn't have

published , by paumier, 2 minute read

the short answer

she has gloves. she probably doesn't have a pair with a three-colour fringe knotted at the wrist. the 008 knotted fringe gloves are nappa leather gloves made by hand in the uk by paumier, £84, size 7, and they are the unusual version of something she already uses.

why unusual rather than expensive?

harper's bazaar advises the classics for the woman with exceptional taste: cashmere, jewellery, pyjamas. the risk with a classic is that she owns a better one. the safer bet for someone who has everything is a familiar object made in a way she hasn't seen.

what makes 008 unusual?

the fringe is three colours, black, tan and cream, threaded through the wrist and knotted in place. the glove itself is plain black sheepskin nappa, so the fringe is the only story. at rest it hangs. when her hands move, the colours separate.

what if she already has fringe?

two other pairs she is unlikely to own:

where does she wear them?

to something. a dinner, a gallery, the theatre. gloves like these are kept on in the cloakroom queue and taken off at the table, which is when people notice.

how does delivery work?

last christmas order dates in the uk: thu 17 dec for in-stock pairs, and thu 3 dec for late-shipping styles, which leave us 14 days after you order. these aren't delivery promises: each product page shows current stock and dispatch time, and delivery & returns has the dates for other countries.

delivery is free to the uk and the eu, and £15 to the rest of the world. we ship worldwide, tracked.
