paumier

paumier (say poh-mee-ay) comes from jeu de paume, the game of the palm. before there was tennis, players in france hit the ball with a bare hand, and by the end of the thirteenth century with a leather glove to protect the palm; the first racket is recorded in 1505.

the people who kept the courts and made the rackets were called paumiers, and we borrowed their name for our gloves.

we make gloves by hand in the uk, in nappa leather, suede and calf hair, for the darkest part of the year: one bright thing against black coats and grey streets. every style comes in size 7, in small runs of each colour.

every order ships tracked from the uk (in-stock pairs the next business day, late-shipping styles 14 days after you order), delivery is free to the uk and eu (£15 to the rest of the world), and you can return your order within 14 days of delivery.

the short answer

there is a photograph everyone has seen. a woman in a black coat, at an airport or on a city street, sometime in the middle of the last century. she is wearing pale gloves. they are the first thing you notice.

there is a photograph everyone has seen. a woman in a black coat, at an airport or on a city street, sometime in the middle of the last century. she is wearing pale gloves. they are the first thing you notice.

pale gloves with a dark coat are the oldest trick in quiet dressing. they draw the eye to the hands, which are always moving. they make a plain coat look finished.

the 007 striped gloves are cream nappa leather. three glossy black stripes run diagonally across the back of the hand. dark stitching follows the fingers. the wrist is gathered, so it sits close under a sleeve.

with a black coat, the stripes do something clever. they connect the cream gloves back to the black coat, so the hands don't look separate from the outfit.

the coat. black wool, long and plain. a single row of buttons.

the neck. a cream silk scarf, or a white shirt collar. one pale thing near the face, one near the hands.

the shoe. black leather. a loafer, a slim boot, a low heel.

the bag. black, structured, held in the hand so the gloves are seen.

one rule: pale near the face, pale at the hands, dark everywhere else.

cream gloves ask for care, and they reward it. wipe them gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing. don't use water on marks. keep them away from dark denim and newsprint, which can transfer colour. store them flat in a pouch, away from light. nappa is smooth, fine leather, and pale nappa shows its life gently, the way a good linen shirt does.

every pair is size 7. each product page shows current stock. change your mind within 14 days of delivery.

the woman in the photograph was not trying very hard. that is why it worked.
